Did you know that we grow fall cabbage? That’s right, we plant baby cabbage plants (transplants) mid-August, following that spring’s strawberries crop. We rip out our strawberry plants (yes we replant every year) and spray paint the black plastic mulch that covers our raised beds white, to keep it cooler in the hot August heat. We reuse the plastic mulch to be more environmentally friendly and save space in our landfill.
We plant two varieties of cabbage, an early maturing and a main season. Usually, we start harvesting it the end of October and it produces through the winter, through about mid-January.
We sell it in our store, to two local restaurants Crossroads Grill, PJ’s Seafood and Steak, and a wholesale produce distributor in VA.
Once the crop is finished we bushhog (mow) what is left (leaves and stalks and bad heads) and remove the plastic and drip tape irrigation that is underneath it. At that point it has been on our land for 16 months! Because we plant strawberries in October the fall before we harvest them mid-April to first of June). We really like when we can be more sustainable with our operation. This is one way we do it.
